The term "Thermistor"
is used to describe devices whose electrical resistance varies
as a function of their temperature.
Ceramic thermistors
are further classified as devices with a Positive Temperature
Coefficient (PTC Thermistors)
whose resistance increases as temperature
increases and devices with a Negative Temperature
Coefficient (NTC
Thermistors) whose resistance decreases as temperature
decreases.
For the sectors listed above NTC
thermistors are the most versatile and cost-effective temperature
sensors in terms of satisfying typical selection criteria and
in terms of inherent advantages over other sensor types, such
as IC's and RTD's. BetaTHERM's
NTC (negative temperature
co-efficient) thermistors
offer many advantages in the area of temperature
sensing. These include the sensitive measurement of temperature
change (-3% to -6% change in resistance per 1°C increase in temperature),
the small size of the thermistor
chip and the high degree of Interchangeability offered by
the component.
